The Challenge.
ACS Construction Group was appointed by Omexom to support the extension of the National Grid Richborough substation, a project designed to futureproof the site for battery storage installations and grid expansion.
The project was delivered within a live National Grid environment, requiring strict compliance with NG protocols and specialist training. Complicating the works further, the ground was contaminated with asbestos and heavy metals, presenting significant environmental and health & safety risks.
Our Solution.
ACS worked in close collaboration with environmental consultants and NG-qualified personnel to plan, manage, and execute all enabling and civils packages safely and efficiently.
Enabling Works & Environmental Management
- Contaminated Ground Management:
- Partnered with Lucion to conduct asbestos surveys and identify contamination types
- Determined works to be non-licensed but competency-critical
- Conducted a gap analysis of our workforce and delivered targeted asbestos awareness and handling training
- Safe Systems of Work:
- Developed a zoned work methodology to isolate contaminated areas
- Maintained a watching brief during excavation and ensured all waste was disposed of via compliant waste streams
- Granular Platform Construction:
- Delivered a 300mm MOT Type 3 platform with 75mm stone chippings
- Included associated earthworks and levelling across the extension area
Civil Works Package
- Earthworks & Excavation – including contaminated spoil handling
- Reinforced Concrete Structures – transformer bunds and equipment bases
- Drainage Systems – designed and installed to meet substation specifications
- Underground Ducting & Troughs – for cabling and utility integration
- Perimeter Security Fencing – new fencing tied into the existing system
- External Lighting – installed to NG substation security standards
All works were delivered under strict National Grid rules and safety protocols, with qualified NG Persons and Competent Persons on site throughout.
The Result.
ACS successfully delivered the project on time, safely, and to exacting technical standards, enabling Omexom and National Grid to proceed with their long-term infrastructure plans for the site.
