The Challenge.
ACS is supporting National Grid on enabling works and the delivery of key civil infrastructure at Pentir Substation in North Wales. Initially engaged to undertake site and ground investigation works, ACS has played a pivotal early role in de-risking the scheme and informing the development of the main construction package.
Following successful early engagement, the scope has expanded to include the delivery of reinforced concrete infrastructure to support upcoming transformer installations.
- Live substation environment, requiring strict compliance with operational constraints and safety procedures
- Restricted access and remote location, impacting logistics and material movement
- Programme certainty, driven by fixed transformer delivery dates
- Developing ground conditions, requiring early investigation to inform design and mitigate delivery risk
ACS has been responsible for early-stage investigation and the development of the civils delivery package, including:
- Site and ground investigation works to inform design and constructability
- Reinforced concrete works to two transformer bunds and plinths
- Associated drainage infrastructure and connections
- Temporary works design to support safe construction delivery
Works are being undertaken within a live substation environment, requiring close coordination with National Grid teams and ongoing operations.
Our Solution.
ACS has adopted a proactive, early-contractor-involvement approach to add value from the outset:
- Early engagement with National Grid, providing budget cost advice and constructability input to shape the emerging scope
- Site investigation-led delivery, enabling risks to be identified and addressed at the earliest stage
- Collaborative planning, working closely with National Grid planners, design teams and site management to develop a robust delivery strategy
- Digital delivery tools, including FieldView, to support quality assurance, reporting and real-time site management
- Flexible resourcing model, utilising experienced in-house teams and specialist formwork subcontractors
Outcomes & Progress
- Successful early-stage engagement, leading to expansion of scope and increased contract value
- De-risked delivery, with investigation works informing design, programme and cost certainty
- Strong client collaboration, reinforcing ACS’s position as a trusted delivery partner to National Grid
- Programme alignment, ensuring readiness for upcoming transformer installation phases
Social Value & Environmental Considerations
ACS is committed to delivering measurable social and environmental value, including:
- Engagement of local supply chain partners where feasible
- Responsible material management aligned with sustainability objectives
- Environmental compliance within a live operational substation setting
Why This Project Stands Out.
- Demonstrates ACS’s ability to add value at early project stages, shaping scope and improving deliverability
- Reflects repeat business and direct award from National Grid based on proven performance
- Showcases a flexible, scalable delivery model, transitioning from investigation to full civils package
- Reinforces the strength of in-house expertise in substation infrastructure delivery
