The Challenge.
ACS was appointed to design and construct a new engine facility and external service yard as part of Centrica’s Perenco project at Wytch Farm, one of the largest onshore oil fields in Europe and a COMAH Upper Tier site.
The facility was designed to convert the gas by-product of oil production into electricity to power the entire site. This required integrating heavy M&E components, including:
- Two 187-tonne engines
- A large Waste Heat Recovery Unit tower
- Extensive external silencers and chimneys
The civils scope was complex due to planning constraints, acoustic performance requirements, the presence of high-pressure gas mains, and the need to maintain a wayleave agreement — all while coordinating the design with multiple stakeholders.
Our Solution.
ACS worked in close partnership with our structural design engineers and the client’s M&E consultants to deliver a bespoke building solution tailored to the technical and safety requirements of this high-risk site.
Design & Coordination Highlights
- A 13m-high steel-framed building incorporating:
- Fire-rated exposed steelwork
- Blockwork and cladding envelope
- Stud wall construction
- Two internal overhead cranes
- External reinforced concrete yard and foundations to support:
- Steel structures for high-level M&E equipment, silencers, and chimneys
- Extensive secondary steelwork and high-level access walkways
Infrastructure Works
- Drainage, ducting, and service troughs throughout the site
- External slabs for HV/LV transformer bases and gas mixing stations
- Road realignment to accommodate new access and services
Engine Installation Planning
A major logistical challenge was the installation of two 187-tonne engines. To accommodate this, ACS worked closely with Centrica to phase construction of the building envelope, allowing clear access at critical milestones during the programme.

ACS delivered the project with precision, safety, and full regulatory compliance, all while maintaining a strong working relationship with Centrica. Collaborative planning, phased delivery, and careful budget control ensured the successful handover of this mission-critical energy facility.
