The Challenge.
ACS was appointed as civil engineering subcontractor for the Coventry BESS project, a 50MW battery storage scheme designed to support the UK’s transition to clean, secure, and affordable energy.
The facility forms part of a growing network of national energy superhubs, playing a key role in balancing grid capacity as coal and gas-fired stations are phased out and intermittent renewables become more prominent. It will also enable ultra-rapid public EV charging hubs in the region — boosting local investment, accessibility, and green mobility infrastructure.
Our Solution.
From the outset, ACS worked collaboratively with Omexom Renewables to deliver a highly coordinated and environmentally sensitive civil engineering solution.
Ecological Site Strip
- Due to the area’s biodiversity value, ACS began with a controlled ecological site strip, carried out under a strict watching brief from an on-site ecologist
- This early action supported the development’s goal of delivering a long-term net biodiversity gain
Civil Engineering Scope
- Bulk Earthworks & Platform Construction to establish a stable base for all incoming infrastructure
- Reinforced Concrete (RC) Structures for:
- Battery skid units (sub-3m height)
- Transformer and control building foundations
- National Grid switch room base
- Underground Works including:
- Extensive cable ducting network
- Buried power and control cabling
- Drainage systems and CCTV base installations
- Site enclosed by a 4m high security fence, with direct connection to the nearby substation
The Result.
ACS met all critical programme milestones, working under tight deadlines and plant delivery schedules. The team delivered the works to exacting safety, quality, and environmental standards, helping enable a facility that supports both grid resilience and the net zero transition in Coventry and beyond.
