The Challenge.
Building on our strong partnership with Omexom Renewables, ACS was appointed as the civil engineering subcontractor for the BESS Brindley battery energy storage site — a pioneering project delivered on behalf of Zenobe Energy.
Located on a restricted greenfield site adjacent to a live railway line and a busy trading estate, the scheme presented several logistical and environmental challenges that required detailed coordination, precision, and a robust delivery strategy.
Our Solution.
ACS undertook a full civil package to prepare the site for battery infrastructure and incoming equipment, managing critical path works with an emphasis on speed, safety, and quality.
Scope Highlights:
- Battery Skid Foundations:
- Constructed on 200mm precast concrete piles driven to a depth of approximately 15m into the substrata
- Reinforced Concrete Works:
- Multiple RC strip foundations, equipment bases, and supporting structures
- Below-Ground Infrastructure:
- Installed with careful planning to ensure alignment with plant delivery milestones
- DNO Switch Room Construction:
- Awarded as an additional package during the project
- Delivered on time and within budget, providing a key asset for grid connection
All works were delivered in close coordination with the main contractor and third-party suppliers, ensuring seamless integration with incoming technology and phased plant installation.
The Result.
This project represents a landmark development in the UK’s renewable energy journey — the first of its kind to be part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Once operational, the BESS facility will help balance energy supply and demand, reduce carbon emissions, and support Swindon Borough Council’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030.
