McVitie’s | Fat Plant Portal

Challenge.

The challenge at the McVitie’s factory in Stockport, Manchester, M19 2SD, involved the demolition of existing structures and the construction of a new Fat Plant Portal steel-framed building to house maturation tanks and associated equipment. Additional tasks included modifying an existing tank building by replacing the roof and installing new bulk oil tanks, along with addressing a failed drainage connection into the existing pump chamber.

Solution.

ACS Construction Group seized the opportunity to showcase its ability to deliver high-quality and competitive building works. The project encompassed the full demolition package managed by ACS, with the added complexity of constructing the Fat Plant building adjacent to live manufacturing units.

Demolition

Demolishing existing buildings posed a high-risk activity. ACS Construction, as the Principal Contractor, meticulously planned and executed the demolition, providing detailed work plans, method statements, and risk assessments. The procedures and sequence of works were closely monitored and agreed upon by ACS, the client, and building control officers at each stage. The demolition adhered to the standards set by BS 6187:2000, ensuring that partially demolished structures were left in a safe condition at the end of each working day. Works near existing overhead power connections and a non-operational conveyor were completed with due consideration, ensuring safety and disconnecting live services as necessary.

Pile foundations

ACS Construction took charge of setting out piles and appointed a specialist piling contractor after thorough design reviews. The chosen piling rig aimed to minimise vibration impact on adjacent structures while meeting design criteria.

Substructure and steel portal framed building

ACS employed contractors for the design and installation of steel portal frame works and connections. Approved contractors from ACS’s list handled the cladding and roofing construction. The external service yard was reinstated according to new construction details while ensuring continued access for the manufacturing facility. Specialist resin flooring and bund walls were completed within the new facility following the installation of manufacturing and storage tanks.

Outcome.

The facility was completed according to design specifications, meeting the satisfaction of the client. ACS Construction Group successfully navigated the challenges posed by the demolition and construction, showcasing its expertise in delivering complex and high-quality building projects.
