Brindley 12MW battery energy storage site (BESS).

Challenge.

Building on our growing relationship with Omexom Renewables, ACS were appointed as civils subcontractor on BESS Brindley, Swindon – a Zenobe Energy Project. The new greenfield development was located on a restricted site, adjacent to a live railway and busy trading estate, so presented numerous challenges to the build.

Solution.

The battery skid foundations were constructed on 200mm precast concrete piles, driven into the substrata to an approximate depth of 15m. Numerous RC strip foundations, equipment bases, and below-ground infrastructure were installed with rigorous planning to maximise outputs and deliver the foundations ahead of Omexom’s plant deliveries. A separate DNO switch room was awarded to ACS and built on time and within budget.

Outcome.

The groundbreaking project, the first of its kind to be part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in the UK, marks an important milestone in Swindon Borough Council’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can help balance power generation with consumer demand, lowering costs for consumers and providing a secure and reliable source of power.
