Meet Stuart Gatward, Contracts Manager, ACS Construction Group.

Q: Tell us about your role at ACS?

A: I oversee up to four contracts at any one time, dependent on the project size, from the tender stage with our tender bid team. We look at pricing, putting together a programme, engaging with suppliers, labour resources, plant requirements and subcontract packages. When a project kicks off, I’ll then make sure it stays on track and is completed on time, on budget and to the highest standards. My time is split between the office and on-site. No day is ever the same at ACS.

Q: What is it like working with the ACS team?

A: I’ve been with ACS for seven years and I’m enjoying my time here. I have good colleague relationships and enjoy catching up together, outside of work, at the local pub. There are no closed doors – we’re all very open and take on each other’s views and advice. Our leadership team is very accommodating, too.

Q: What advice do you have for young people?

A: Young people should be encouraged to join the construction industry because there are many professional companies with a variety of roles to offer. Apprenticeships also allow you to learn a lot about the industry. Construction can be a rewarding career, when you put the hard work in. My youngest son, Zach, works on the ground for ACS.

Q: What challenges do you face in your role?

A: Sticking to the programme can sometimes be challenging. But we always look at what has been done in the past two weeks and what we plan to do for the next two. This helps to keep us on track. I work closely with our quantity surveyors to keep an eye on monthly costs and check how this compares with the value or work we’ve done in the month. When the contract is completed, it’s rewarding to see projects finished to the client’s satisfaction.

Q: What do you like doing outside of work?

A: I play golf and cycle. I also enjoy football and socialising with friends.
